Meet Our 2018 Emcees!
Mary Babbitt Hammers is a three-time Emmy Award winning host who can also make three school lunches in three minutes flat. Her background is in television news, which is why she can often be heard telling her children to “stand-by” or “wrap it up!” Mary was a news anchor and reporter for 15 years at television stations from Oxnard to Santa Maria to San Jose. Her career path took a more fruitful turn when she began hosting “In Wine Country” on NBC Bay Area and syndicated nationally on NBC. The show found a thirsty audience whose support helped it win multiple Emmy Awards and a James Beard Award, among other accolades. Mary is also a freelance writer, who does voiceover and on-air projects as well. She is launching a wine podcast called, “Sip, Sip Hooray!” which will soon be available at SipSipHoorayPodcast.com. Mary and her husband, Chuck, have four children hence, the interest in wine.
Garvin Thomas is a reporter, photographer, editor, and fill-in anchor for NBC Bay Area News. He produces stories under the station’s Bay Area Proud banner. They are positive, inspirational stories about the people, groups, and companies making the Bay Area, and the world, a better place to live. Bay Area Proud recently celebrated a major milestone, 500 stories and counting! Garvin has more than twenty-five years experience working in television news, having spent time working in Boston, Berlin, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles before coming to the Bay Area in 2004. Garvin has received national and regional awards for his reporting and photography, including seven Emmy Awards. Garvin, his wife Karen and their three children live in the South Bay.
